Infrared Surveillance Camera - Get Extra Security With Night Vision

Low light areas around your home or business make for an easy target for a thief. Normal video cameras aren't able to clearly see much more than just a shadow. An infrared surveillance camera is necessary in a dim or no light situation.

How Do Infrared Cameras Work?

Night vision security cameras work by using an infrared light near the lens. This light cannot be seen by the human eye. If you have just a slight amount of normal light, your infrared cam can take a picture or video that's just as good as in the daylight.

Having a set of infrared security cameras complements any surveillance system by giving you complete coverage during daylight and nighttime hours. Most IR cameras take pictures in black and white.

Some features to look for:

Generally with the lowest priced infrared surveillance, you'll need to purchase a power supply of some sort for the cameras. They are usually sold separately, so don't forget to include cables in your order. If you live in a very cold climate, be sure to find a camera that can operate outside in extreme temperatures.

You can find a good all purpose infrared camera for around $30-$50. If you want more features the price will be higher. A vandal resistant model runs around $260 because it's made with an impact resistant frame.

Look to spend under $200 for an indoor/outdoor camera with mid to high resolution and a package that includes mounting brackets and power supply.

What is Infrared Light?

Regular lighting where you can see clearly is called 'visible light'. Cameras that work with visible light only show darkness and perhaps a few shadows when it's dark. Infrared technology can actually 'see' in the dark. The colors sometimes can be different but the images will be clear and recognizable. It's used in night vision equipment when there isn't enough visible light to be able to see.

Infrared technology was originally developed for the military and industrial markets. It's now been picked up by homes and businesses in the form of night vision security cameras. Having your own infrared surveillance camera will round out any good security system.
